Hello!
I’m Grete, a language tutor and founder of EstonianwithGrete. As a fluent speaker of three languages, my passion for languages began eight years ago when I volunteered at an Estonian language café in Tallinn. Since then, I’ve been active in language exchanges, always eager to share my beautiful mother tongue, Estonian.
Though not a formally trained teacher, I have over three years of experience and have taught more than 2,000 lessons, with many students staying with me for years. I’ve developed a beginner-friendly method that gives learners the confidence to speak from day one, which I believe is key to success.
I’ve also hosted interactive language cafés for intermediate learners and run a social media account where I share everyday Estonian through fun and simple content. My aim is to build confidence in my students and make Estonian accessible, even if it seems intimidating at first.
When I’m not teaching, you’ll find me chatting in Italian, enjoying nature through hiking and climbing, or occasionally playing badminton. And when it’s time to unwind, I love to read or listen to a cozy podcast.

The course is designed for English speakers. Because English and Estonian are very different languages, I explain things in English for most of the course so that you can understand the main concepts more easily, and the transition to Estonian is smoother and easier to understand.
No previous knowledge of the language is required.
The beginner's course is designed for those who are starting from scratch, which is why it starts from the absolute basics. However, the course is also perfect for advanced beginners, as the difficulty of the lessons will gradually increase.

A Warm Welcome to the course
In the introductory module, you will learn the essentials to kickstart your Estonian language journey. You’ll meet your tutor, Grete, and become familiar with the course platform, ensuring a smooth learning experience from the start. This module will lay the groundwork for your studies by introducing key concepts that will be built upon in the following sessions.
Exploring the Basics of Estonian language
As you dive into the second module, you will explore the fundamentals of the Estonian language, including the alphabet, pronunciation, and unique sounds. You will learn how to construct simple sentences and introduce yourself effectively. This foundational knowledge will be crucial as you progress to more complex language structures.
Building a Practical Vocabulary
In the third module, you will expand your essential vocabulary by focusing on everyday words and phrases. You’ll cover topics such as numbers, dates, and family relationships, which will enable you to communicate in practical situations. By mastering this vocabulary, you will gain the confidence to engage in conversations and express your thoughts more clearly.
Navigating Everyday Conversations
In the final module, you will be prepared for real-world interactions through everyday conversations. You will practice asking for directions, making plans, and expressing likes and dislikes in Estonian. Additionally, you will gain cultural insights that enrich your learning experience, allowing you to understand the social customs and etiquette that define communication in Estonia. This holistic approach ensures that you not only learn the language but also connect with Estonian culture on a deeper level.

The course is divided into several sections, containing more than 40 video lessons and exercises. I recommend watching the sessions in order, as the modules offer a sequential and logical learning path.
Remember that you can always go back and watch the lessons as often as needed.
